U.S. Cancels Tariff Exemption for Low-Value Goods

On August 29, U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to revoke the “de minimis” exemption policy for low-value trade officially came into force, marking a major adjustment to the country’s import tariff rules.

The policy change will have a direct impact on a large volume of cross-border shipments: 92% of the total freight volume across the United States, along with up to 4 million packages handled daily, will lose their previous duty-free status. From now on, all imported goods valued at no more than $800 and shipped through international postal networks will be required to pay the corresponding tariffs.

Postal carriers have been assigned a key role in implementing the new policy. They are responsible for determining the specific methods to collect tariffs on packages flowing through the postal system. After collecting the tariffs from either the sender or the recipient, the carriers must remit the funds to U.S. Customs and Border Protection in a timely manner.
